Upcycle Candy Tins

I have to confess that I have a thing for tins.  I’ve decided to share my tin hoarding to others who love to upcycle these fun containers into cute gift boxes and such.

Here are photos of my previous tin alterations:

Please excuse the poor photography from back then.  I always upcycled the tins as birthday containers to hold earrings and magnets.

How To: Paper Swallows Wall Decor

How to: Paper Swallows Wall Decor

blogg

I came up with a quick, easy, and cheap-o solution for my decor and decals craving.   I saw these set of birds as wall decor at Target and I was real tempted.  But it was all plastic and came with a ton of pushpins so it was a no-go for me.  Plus, I didn’t want to spend any money on home decor when my stay here at this location is decided on a month-month basis.  So here are some examples of wall decals I’ve been drooling over:

There are tons more but I’m trying to make this a quick blog to get on with my errands so that’s just a teaser for you.  I combined the idea of wall vinyl decals & the 3D plastic birds from Target to come up with these paper swallows.

Easy Peezy Instructions

  • paper scraps- try to keep it eco!  I used only one brand new sheet of black paper.  The rest were from scraps I saved.
  • double-sided tape
  1. Trace or freehand out image of your choice.  I just googled and traced mine.  teehee*
  2. Cut them out.  I slightly curled the wings on my swallows to give them a 3D look.
  3. Slap them randomly on your walls.
  4. Tah-dah!  Told you, easy peeeeezy.

Personalized Ceramic Pieces

I’ve been loving the ceramic lounge Petroglyph here in Santa Cruz, CA where you go in, pick a blank ceramic piece, paint it, and have them fire for you.  It’s tons of fun and adds a great personal touch. I painted two bowls as bday gifts and a teapot for mother’s day.  I’ve never been an artistic person but I’ve been really satisfied with my pieces.  I’ve learned to keep things simple like making dots and stripes .  Tricks like using tape to get straight lines and sponging are really easy to do.

Gorgeous, Glamorous , & Green

Being green doesn’t necessary mean you have to be a smelly hippy (no offense I love most hippies) so I wanted to prove this by sharing an awesome find when I found RiceBunny’s blog with her amazing natural & eco beauty tutorials.  Her blog is so addicting *sigh*

Get Beautiful Curls with Paper Bags or Rags

With the paper bag curl technique you don’t use any heat so it’s healthy for the environment and your hair.  Now while the awesome author, RiceBunny in the tutorial uses new cute paper bags, you can take the step to use grocery bags or other recycled paper to add that extra green touch.  When I learned to do this, I used strips of fabrics from old t-shirts (old sheets, pillow cases, anything fabric) instead called “rag curls”.  You can youtube this and try both to see what works better for you.  Either way, they’re both eco.  I personally haven’t curled with paper yet and that’s because my hair is too short at the moment.  It was pretty comfortable to sleep in the fabric strips.

magazine envelope

This is a super-dee-duper easy envelope you can make from old magazines with minimal cutting which means less scraps of paper left over. You just need old magazines, scissors, and tape or other adhesive. I package my items this way most times.
